Description

A comforting and hearty Irish steak pie filled with tender beef, vegetables, and wrapped in a flaky crust, perfect for cozy evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs beef (chuck or stewing beef), cut into chunks
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 sheets of pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large pot, heat a splash of oil over medium heat. Add the beef chunks, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper. Brown them on all sides for about 5-7 minutes, then remove from the pot and set aside.
  3. Add the chopped onion, sliced carrots, and minced garlic to the pot, cooking for about 5 minutes until softened.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables, stirring for another minute.
  5. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring continuously.
  6. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Let the mixture simmer.
  7. Return browned beef to the pot, cover, and simmer for about 30 minutes.
  8. Roll out one pie crust into a pie dish and pour in the beef mixture.
  9. Roll out the second pie crust to cover the filling, sealing the edges and making slits for steam.
  10. Brush the top with the beaten egg, then bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

For variations, consider adding mushrooms, root vegetables, or using chicken instead of beef.
