Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/4 cup crushed candy canes for topping
  • Red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract, and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until a dough forms.
  6. Divide the dough in half and color one half with red food coloring.
  7. Roll small pieces of each dough into ropes and twist them together to shape into candy canes.
  8. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 8-10 minutes.
  9. Sprinkle crushed candy canes on warm cookies before they cool.
