Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh apples, peeled and sliced
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups milk (for the custard sauce)
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sugar (for the custard sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the custard sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk together.
  5. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with the milk.
  6. Gently fold in the sliced apples and pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. For the custard sauce, heat the milk until just steaming.
  9. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth.
  10. Temper the egg mixture by slowly adding the hot milk, then return to the saucepan.
  11. Cook over medium-low heat until thickened, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  12. Serve the warm custard over slices of the apple cake.

Notes

Make sure to use crisp apples for the best flavor. This cake can be served warm or at room temperature.
