- 4 cups of diced potatoes
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- 1 cup of grated Gruyère cheese
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh thyme for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until translucent and lightly golden.
- Combine diced potatoes, heavy cream, salt, and pepper in a large bowl, mixing well.
- Layer half of the potato mixture in a greased baking dish, followed by half of the sautéed onions and half of the Gruyère cheese.
- Repeat the layering process with the remaining potato mixture, onions, and Gruyère cheese.
- Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for about 35 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly, and the potatoes are fork-tender.
- Let cool slightly before serving, and garnish with fresh thyme.
Notes
For variations, try adding fresh rosemary, replacing Gruyère cheese with aged cheddar, or adding steamed vegetables.
