- 10 fresh apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties)
- 1 orange, sliced
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 5 cups water
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (optional)
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves (optional)
Instructions
- Wash and slice the apples and the orange. Remove any seeds as you go.
- Combine the sliced apples, orange, cinnamon sticks, water, and optional brown sugar and cloves in a large pot.
- Boil the mixture, then reduce the heat to a simmer, allowing it to simmer uncovered for about 120 minutes.
- Mash the apples with a potato masher occasionally while it simmers.
- Cool the mixture slightly after simmering.
- Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large bowl or pitcher, discarding the solids.
- Serve warm or chilled, storing any leftovers in the refrigerator.
Notes
This cider can be made ahead of time and warmed up just before serving. Feel free to customize with spices or sweeteners.
