Description
Delightful cinnamon rolls with a festive red velvet twist, perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- 1 package active dry yeast
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon
- ½ cup chopped pecans (optional)
- 8 oz cream cheese
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 2 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and yeast.
- In a saucepan, gently heat the milk and butter until warm, then pour into the dry ingredients and mix well.
- Add the egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract, mixing until well incorporated.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle ¼ inch thick, spread butter, sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon, and add pecans if using.
- Tightly roll the dough and cut into 12 equal pieces. Place in a greased baking dish and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- For the frosting, beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth. Frost the warm rolls before serving.
Notes
For a lighter sweetness, consider drizzling with a simple glaze instead of frosting.
