Description

Delightful cinnamon rolls with a festive red velvet twist, perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • ½ cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. In a saucepan, gently heat the milk and butter until warm, then pour into the dry ingredients and mix well.
  3. Add the egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract, mixing until well incorporated.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle ¼ inch thick, spread butter, sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon, and add pecans if using.
  6. Tightly roll the dough and cut into 12 equal pieces. Place in a greased baking dish and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. For the frosting, beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth. Frost the warm rolls before serving.

Notes

For a lighter sweetness, consider drizzling with a simple glaze instead of frosting.
